As a new addition to the healthmatters.fitness website and blog, I am launching a series titled “Health Matters in 2025.” This collection of articles will address current issues in health, science, and medicine.
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made headlines and the agency is expected to remain a hot topic in 2025.
The FDA’s origins date back to 1862, when Abraham Lincoln signed the legislation that created the Department of Agriculture. Some of the original responsibilities charged to the Department of Agriculture have become part of the FDA’s responsibility such as enhancing the safety of our food supply.
Currently, the FDA operates under the Department of Health and Human Services and holds a vast array of responsibilities aimed at safeguarding public health across numerous areas. The FDA ensures the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices. Additionally, it oversees the safety of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation.
Watch this 6 minute for an overview of the FDA.
One of the FDA’s recent decisions was to prohibit the use of red dye #3 in food and beverages. Additionally, the FDA is revising its criteria for defining foods as “healthy” in relation to food labeling. Upcoming articles will discuss those actions in more depth as well explore other aspects of the FDA.
I will also keep publishing my other series of articles focused on nutrition, fitness, and medical topics. Click here to explore my latest piece in the series about protein nutrition titled, “Amino Acids: More Than Just Building Blocks of Proteins.” Additionally, check out “Long Duration Endurance” in my Training 4 Life series. That series will continue to discuss the nine fundamental adaptations our bodies undergo in response to exercise with an upcoming article on resistance training. In the article “Inspiration, Motivation, Discipline, Habit, and Passion” I share insights and experiences from both myself and others on how to cultivate an exercise habit.
One intention I have for the Health Matters blog is to share more intriguing and entertaining content beyond the realms of health, fitness, and medicine. Recently while browsing through YouTube one video caught my eye. Paul Anka had covered a song by the grunge band Nirvana (you can find the original song here). Accompanied by a big band, he presented a jazzy rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” evoking the ambiance of a classic Las Vegas lounge. Fun!
